Finasteride and topical minoxidil can both be options for hair-loss drugs, in fact even using both can be an option, since both drugs work differently, when combined they can have a synergistic result.

Dr. Green highlighted this in her blog about Topical Minoxidil vs. Finasteride – and also was quoted today in Hone Health, noting that “finasteride is great at keeping the follicle healthy for strong hair growth, while topical minoxidil can keep the hair follicle in the anagen phase for longer,” says Green. “Studies have shown that combining topical minoxidil and oral finasteride gives patients better results than taking either medication alone.”

Various studies continue to show that participants who took both drugs had better hair growth overall.  There is some risk potential though, for instance Minoxidil can irritate the skin on your scalp and make hair grow in places where you don’t want (such as on ears if you rub it there). Finasteride’s side effects include erectile dysfunction, loss of sex drive, and breast growth potentially, but do not occur in most patients.
