What is Cryolipolysis & How Does it Work With CoolSculpting

What is Cryolipolysis?

Cryolipolysis is a body contouring technique that works by freezing the subcutaneous fat tissue to kill fat cells in the body, which in turn are then ejected using the body’s own natural process. As a modern alternative to liposuction, it is instead a completely non-invasive technique that requires no surgery.  Cryolipolysis has become a popular way to help reduce excess, stubborn fat but without having to go through the expense, or the downtime associated with traditional surgical methods. In fact, the thought of having surgery for many people and the long recovery time afterwards is something that has discouraged a lot of people from undergoing the previous forms of treatment.

With Cryolipolysis though, the traditional reasons why people would avoid removing excess fat from the body have been resolved. Cryolipolysis is also the technical name for the brand CoolSculpting (launched by Zeltiq, since purchased by Allergan in 2017), which also includes other solutions such as the CoolMini. It is also known to many as “fat freezing.”

Cryolipolysis is carried out by using applicators that are placed on the specific area that is to be treated, and the skin and body in this area is then cooled down typically to below freezing temperatures. This then helps kill the fat cells in the area, but without damaging the skin. Some side effects may occur, including redness or even some bruising to the area, but this typically resolves itself quickly.

Where can Cryolipolysis be used?

Cryolipolysis can be used in a number of different areas of the body where there is excess fat. It is commonly used on the abdomen, stomach and hips area, but can also be used under the chin and on the arms. It is a relatively quick procedure to carry out, with most sessions lasting between 30 and 40 minutes. Cryolipolysis doesn’t work immediately, because the body’s own natural processes are involved. So once the fat cells have been killed, the body starts to lose the excess fat. This process starts working immediately, but can take a few weeks before you start to fully see the effects. This technique has also been found to reduce up to 20 to 25% of the fat in the target area, which is a considerable reduction of mass in the area.

Another benefit of Cryolipolysis is that for individuals that maintain a healthy lifestyle after the treatment, then the fat will not reappear. This works the same way as if a person has started to exercise and have in turn lost weight because of this. If that person stops exercising, then fat cells can reappear. If they carry on exercising, then the fat will stay off. So, with this in mind it should be noted that without a change in lifestyle, then the fat will eventually re-appear again as a part of the body’s own natural reaction to excess calories. In these cases, it is possible to carry out Cryolipolysis again, but for many individuals the treatment itself can be a good incentive to change one’s lifestyle since the change in body appearance can boost a person’s confidence and help kick-start a new routine.
